Books our friends
The World book day, set me thinking about all the wonderful books that I happened to peruse. To put it simply its an eclectic mix of beautifully scripted classics; books that entrall with their mystique, plots twists and turns. Books like those of P.G Woodehouse leave you laughing aloud after every two sentences or more. Comics of Tintin with all the phrases of 'Thundering Typhoons/ Blistering Barnacles' and the lovable Snowy have left an impact. Talking about Tintin, how can one forget about the inimitable Asterix and Obelix and of course all the Archie books.
Here are a few of my Favourite books, in random order:-
Blandings Castle and Elsewhere by PG Wodehouse
Humorous and deft its all beautifully interwoven amongst the empress of Blandings- the prize pig, Clarence- The ninth Earl of Emsworth-, his sister lady Constance and a sweet girl from London...
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
The Kite Runner is easily divided into three main sections: Amir's childhood in Kabul; Amir and Baba's years in Fremont, California; and, finally, Amir's return to Kabul.
Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian L. Weiss
"For truly we are all angels temporarily hiding as humans." - Brian L. Weiss
After discovering about past lives, Brian L. Weiss entered a new phase in his career; one that would use memories from the past lives of patients in order to heal them.
AndThen There Was None - Agatha Christie
Ten strangers arrive on an island invited by an unknown host. Each of them has a secret to hide and a crime for which they must pay. The strangers include a reckless playboy, a troubled Harley Street doctor, a formidable judge, an uncouth detective, an unscrupulous mercenary, a God-fearing spinster, two restless servants, a highly decorated general and an anxious secretary. One by one they are picked off. Who will survive? And who is the killer? Copies of an ominous nursery rhyme hang in each room, the murders mimicking the awful fates of its ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’.
The guests realise that the nature of the deaths corresponds with the respective lines of the rhyme.
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
A collection of twelve short stories. Each tale features the criminal investigations of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, as seen through the first-person perspective of his partner, Dr. John H. Watson
Dan Brown is the premiere source for edge-of-your-seat thrillers. I have read all books by Dan Brown and the Robert Langdon series is one of my favourites. Ever since I’ve picked up The Da Vinci Code, I’ve been hooked on the Robert Langdon series. Angels and Demons is yet another outstanding book. I admit that I have a weakness for the formula Dan Brown utilises for his thrillers, employing an intoxicating mix of history, art, poetry, symbols, codes, and famous landmarks or architecture.
Dan Brown combines action with mystery, historical and science elements in an outstanding way and he creates an action thriller that you just cannot put down.
One of the greatest aspects of Dan Brown books are the historical elements. its all described in such detail, it almost seems that you are reliving that scene, that plot and belong to that era!
Tale of Two Cities – Charles Dickens
The begining,of the book is epic-
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity,
it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way..."
The novel's plot occurs in two prominent cities Paris and London. The story of this novel is set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and the dictatorial regime
I have been an avid reader myself. Mostly due to the access to an awesome library of our school, the humongous Central Command Library and the amazing British Council Library in our City.
Books from all these awesome places had a unique scent of their own. The most loved aroma was that of the books that we got from the British Council library.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure and good fortune of reading most of the English Classics. Epic works of
Shakespeare
Charles Dickens,
Leo Tolstoy
Emily Bronte,
Thomas Hardy ... all found a place in my avid reading interest as did
Jane Austen
Rumi
In the midst of all these classics, I loved to peruse books by
Ann Rynd
P.G Woodhouse
Agatha Christie
Daphne de Maurier
Tintin comics
Asterix and Obelix
Archie manuals! _ The list is endless
Amidst the books by Irving Stone, Irwing Wallace, Dan Brown, Paulo Cohelo and Danielle Steele, I found time to go through the books by Rudyard Kipling, Premchand too!
